A chi dice che non ci sono, io rispondo: ero lì quando nessuno guardava.

Per me, essere al Siracusa Pride non è un gesto, non è una foto, non è una sigla su un manifesto.

È il proseguimento di un cammino che ho iniziato 53 anni fa, quando, a 13 anni, arrivata da sola a San Francisco, la comunità LGBTQ+ mi ha preso per mano e mi ha insegnato che la diversità non si nasconde, ma si abbraccia.

E quando parlo di comunità, dico tutta la comunità senza distinzioni.

Gay, lesbiche, trans. Per me è sempre stato così.

E non lo dico oggi perché va di moda. Lo dico perché ho le cicatrici per dimostrarlo.

Nel 1981, a 21 anni, cantavo:

Chi è Vanessa la vamp?

È una farfalla che fu

Solo un bruco di cortile

Era tanto tempo fa

Prese i risparmi e scappò

A Casablanca e provò

Un bel corpo da indossare

Una vera novità.

Secondo voi, a chi parlava una ragazza di 21 anni, in un'Italia che nemmeno sapeva pronunciare la parola "trans"?

Allora non c'erano like sui social, e non c'erano passerelle facili.

C'era solo il coraggio di salire su un palco e dire, senza urlarlo ma con i gesti: io ci sono anche per voi (ocio, gay super ok)

E quando tornavo da quelle apparizioni, sapete cosa trovavo? Bacchettate. Sguardi che mi giudicavano. Parole che mi dicevano: “Non farlo, Heather”.

Ma io l'ho fatto lo stesso

So che in questi giorni si è parlato molto di me. E so che alcune mie parole, isolate dal contesto di una vita intera, hanno fatto discutere.

Se qualcuno ha percepito distanza o incomprensione, mi dispiace. Perché non è mai stato il mio intento allontanare nessuno.

E voglio chiarire un punto, perché la sincerità è l'unica strada che conosco. La mia affermazione, per quanto forte, si limitava all'aspetto fisiologico. L'anima di una persona non ha nulla a che vedere con la sua biologia.

Ma se c'è una cosa che ho imparato in 53 anni di cammino con questa comunità, è che il rispetto della diversità non si costruisce con le etichette. Si costruisce con gli sguardi, con i gesti, con la presenza.

Ed io l’ho fatto per una vita intera con le mie opinioni, con i miei limiti, con la mia umanità.

In anni in cui essere dalla parte di questa comunità non dava popolarità, non dava visibilità, non dava niente se non la gioia di essere quello che si è. E quella gioia, per me, è ancora tutto.

La diversità non è un valore che si allunga o si accorcia a piacimento. Non è un vestito che si indossa per una sera e si toglie il giorno dopo. La diversità è un impegno. È un patto che si costruisce insieme anche quando non siamo d’accordo su tutto.

E la diversità vera, passa attraverso il dialogo. Attraverso la tolleranza. Attraverso il confronto, anche quando è scomodo. Anche quando è difficile. Mai attraverso l’odio.

Io vengo a Siracusa per festeggiare tutta la comunità LGBTQ+. Ogni persona. Ogni storia. Ogni identità. Senza eccezioni, senza esclusioni, senza distinguo. Sarò lì per abbracciare chiunque vorrà essere abbracciato. Per ballare con chi ha voglia di ballare. Per stringere la mano a chi ha camminato più a lungo di me.

Senza distinzioni. Senza paura. Con amore.
